How did cats learn to cover their own poop in the litter box?

Variant7 asked:

I don’t think feline cats in the wild cover their poops like house cats do. Is this a behavior they developed from living with humans?

not enough evolutionary time to get that behaviour from humans. Most likely its a higiene thing, lots of animals clean up after themselves to protect young from illness or just to keep everything neat

Cats do it conceal their poop is the neighbourhood the only time that cats will resort to middening if they want to mark territory.
Cats do it conceal their poop is when they do bury their scent from predators and ferals who tend to mark territory this is the strongest form of some kind.
