How to keep the cats out of the sandbox?

We are wanting to put a large playground/swingset in our back yard and we would like it to be surrounded by a large sandbox. However there are so many cats in the neighbourhood and having a child indgest cat poop can be very dangerous. I am afraid that having a large sand box is just inviting the cats to come and use is as a litterbox. Any suggestions in keeping the cats away from the sandbox?

It’s impossible. What you offer with a sandbox is the perfect litter box and every cat KNOWS this.
What they do on playground sandboxes is have a plastic cover that goes over the sandbox to protect it against contamination.

You’ll just have to keep it covered when it’s not being used and tell your kids if they see a cat in it to shoo it away. Give them some water pistols or spray bottles to keep the cats out.

For any stray cats and youd never be able to consider if so id rethink its not in use sand box cover under the swing set like you mean you say.
